Crohn’s flare-ups: cause & effect
Crohn’s flare-ups are a sudden intensification of the disease’s symptoms and can occur when the body’s immune system gets triggered. The most common Crohn’s-related symptoms include:
- Abdominal cramps
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Rectal pain
- Joint pain
- Rashes
Treatments aim to reduce the level of inflammation in the body. Typically, when inflammation reduction is achieved, symptoms go into remission. With proper follow-up care, patients may be able to stay in remission for extended periods of time.
If left untreated
Left untreated, Crohn’s flare-ups can worsen and lead to additional problems. It is best to treat a flare-up as soon as possible while keeping stress levels low, as the anxiety of a flare-up can exacerbate symptoms.
