We recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Kei Martin, DispatchHealth’s Lead Advanced Practice Provider for Orange County, California. Kei filled us in on what drew her to DispatchHealth, what she enjoys most about her job, and how our company makes a difference in patients’ lives.
Kei’s Journey to DispatchHealth
An Alabama native, Kei is a graduate of the University of Mobile. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 2015, as well as a Master of Science degree in Nursing in 2019. Kei is currently working toward her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree, and expects to graduate in 2023.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Kei worked as a nurse in Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida, during which time she gained extensive experience in emergency medicine. A friend thought that Kei would be a great fit for DispatchHealth, and in January 2021, Kei started working as an Advanced Practice Provider in our Washington market.
One of the qualities that attracted Kei to DispatchHealth was our company’s unique medical model. As she told us, “With my ER background, I always felt that I could do more, and I feel really comfortable with patients. Taking care of them in their own homes was something that felt so unique.” Kei also felt that it was important to find a company that would provide her with support, resources, and opportunities for growth. When she interviewed for her position here, she noted that, “it was just really apparent that they treated people well and wanted to support the people who worked for them.”
Kei’s Career at DispatchHealth
After Kei began working at DispatchHealth, she was quickly promoted and now serves as our Lead Advanced Practice Provider for Orange County. She appreciates that our company made it possible for her to propel her career forward, explaining, “When I first started working for DispatchHealth, within the first few months, I knew that I wanted to grow with the company and invest in them the way that they invested in me.”
“They helped me explore all of the different aspects of DispatchHealth and find my niche,” said Kei “When the Orange County market opened up, I was ready to take on that new responsibility and that role because of the support that I had from my current leaders.”
A Typical Day in the Life of Kei
Kei’s role as a Lead Advanced Practice Provider requires her to wear many hats—some days she goes out into the field and treats patients in their homes, while other days she focuses on managing her clinical staff. This might involve attending administrative meetings, coordinating with leadership, and reviewing policies, charts, and notes.
One of Kei’s favorite parts of her job is the interaction that she gets to have with patients. As she told us, “At DispatchHealth, we focus on quality care and a part of that is being that listening ear for people, hearing them out, and allowing them their space to talk about their health. I think that’s really what sets us apart, because we love having that time to be with our patients.”
Kei also enjoys being able to build relationships with her coworkers, whom she refers to as “excellent clinicians and rockstar humans in general.” This includes friends that she’s made in other markets across the country: “It’s really fun to just connect with people. We interact with people remotely all the time, and you do it so often that you get a glimpse of their personalities.”
The DispatchHealth Difference
We asked Kei about how DispatchHealth makes a difference in patients’ lives, and while she was quick to cite the level of convenience that our in-home visits offer, she also pointed to the additional resources that we can provide for patients. As Kei explained, “Sometimes patients are very proud and stoic and don’t like to talk about their home environment when you see them in a clinic setting. But when you’re in their home, you’re able to assess their environment and ability to take care of themselves, and you can ask them if they need any resource connections or help. That’s where we can make the biggest difference.”
